Introduction to the London Underground
The London Underground, commonly known as “the Tube”, is one of the world’s oldest and most extensive rapid transit systems. It serves London and parts of the surrounding counties of Buckinghamshire, Essex, and Hertfordshire. The network consists of 11 lines: the Bakerloo Line, Central Line, Circle Line, District Line, Hammersmith & City Line, Jubilee Line, Metropolitan Line, Northern Line, Piccadilly Line, Victoria Line, and Waterloo & City Line. Its first section opened in 1863, making it the world’s first underground railway. As of 2023, the network spans approximately 402 kilometers, has 272 stations, and serves around 5 million passengers daily.
